Emergency lighting is a range of backup lighting that will operate automatically in the event of a power failure. It provides sufficient illumination to ensure that all occupants of a building can safely evacuate the premises during a blackout.

There are three main types of emergency lighting. In situations such as a fire or security incident, escape route lighting can reduce panic and identify evacuation routes and obstacles. It ensures that the means of escape out of the premises is effectively identified, sufficiently illuminated and can be safely used by the occupants of the building.

Open area lighting: Typically referred to as an anti-panic lighting, this ensures there is sufficient lighting to enable building occupants to reach a location where an escape route can be identified. Open area lighting is applicable to floor areas larger than 60m2.

High-risk task area lighting: This provides higher levels of illumination to allow potentially dangerous processes to be shut down or stopped prior to evacuation, for example turning off major machinery or equipment.

Life safety first:  When the power in a building fails or in the event of a fire or other emergency, emergency lighting can help occupants evacuate the building safely. To minimize panic, a well-lit exit route allows people to identify a method of escape and will allow them to exit the building in a timely and appropriate manner. To assist first responders, they may not be familiar with the layout of the building, so emergency lighting will assist them in reaching their targets safely. Emergency lighting is required to comply with the current standards of health and safety in the workplace and is a legal requirement to prove that you comply with the standards.
